Still Life 'Self Portrait" 10/10/16

To practice further some of the continuous line drawing and shading skills we looked at in last weeks class.

The purpose of this homework was providing lavage towards future sessions, the aim was to focus using different techniques to enhance are knowledge and skills.

I started by doing a series of singular object drawings to practice before doing the main homework required. I wasn’t confident with my approach towards continuous line & pastel tone work so that’s where I decided to aim improvement on.
Fine-Liner 3.0 was used for the continuous line drawings.
As well as understanding my skills I wanted to see what would work towards my main piece. I was concerned with the amount of objects required for the homework so here I experimented.

Headphones were a notable inclusion throughout the work, however I concluded with avoiding them because I wasn't satisfied with the final results in each practise sketch
.

I had to provide three different drawing describing myself through objects that relate to me, this meant I could be experimental with displaying the work as well as what would be displayed: A controller, Converse shoe, Coffee mug & A graphic novel.

The final conclusion of the homework I was extremely pleased with the end results throughout each piece displaying a series of strong line work and I feel I displayed a good balance with detail and work on a limited time. Something which made the work effective was how I placed each object, not masking and hiding too much. The one mistake I feel was necessary was removing the text on the graphic novel, which was used for continues line, but was removed with the remaining pieces, however I didn't want to take too much time being bogged down with the detail. But does take away the viewers knowledge of a book, if reviewing the pastel piece separate.

The Proportion 10/10/16

This session we explored proportion with life drawing. This meant drawing the figure with such focus measuring the module in the space, we were shown methods to use preparing this type of piece. This included framing the image with are hands as well as scaling with a pencil. I found this experience to be a challenging because we had to be very precise with scale, constantly double checking proportions against parts of the body. Above is one of the session's pieces, here I've used the technique of measurements from the modules head as a template to scale the rest of the figure. Notice the horizontal lines within the drawing. This was provided on the module blog to give insight into the workshop, I found this to be extremely resourceful with guidance to displaying a measured portrait.

Originally this piece was completed using a standard pencil, however I decided to revisit with much noticeable line work using a pastel stick.
Here was the first drawing of the workshop that lesson, the most noticeable feature is the amount of detail I included with in the piece, whilst the other drawings I scaled back with the content. Here I wanted to give insight into how the tutor wanted us to work.

Negative spaces

Personal study: Negative spaces
The materials used for this work: 2B and 4B Pencils, sharpener and rubber.
Here we had to select a collection of household objects, focusing on the shapes of the objects which meant simplifying and capturing the characteristics of each item. This investigation had to be completed 20 minutes with each item. Negative spaces reminded me a lot of stencil cut-outs were I'd create an image only using shapes to describe the object/ scene.

Life Drawing Module.

Life drawing's with a female model.
This workshop was similar to last weeks study, we'd have to develop a collection of different pieces whilst having to complete each drawing with certain rules: Left Hand/ 5 Minutes/ Pen constantly on the paper & 3 types of tools.
I found this lesson very interesting since I had never previously done such a study working from a model, I felt confident with the progress made here especially throughout the lesson. I started of relying too much on detail to then embrace on a rapid approach, working with shapes, shadows and scale were my main areas when developing with a quick manner.

Joe & Cary - Blind

Joe - 5 minutes

This part of the workshop requested us to not look at the portrait what so ever and instead keep are eyes constantly on the partner we were drawing.

Pen
This part of the lesson was very amusing and very difficult because I constantly wanted to look at how I was working, fortunately the end result was an interesting concept. The feature I managed to display and was satisfied with was Joe's hair.

Cary - 2 minutes

Once again we had time cut dramatically so this only added to the pressure and torment of not being able to view our work while working. The work I was able to produce displayed sharp line and shapes most notably within a face. I do feel I was able to provide a basis of character with the partner I drew.

Kayleigh - Life drawings

10 Minutes

Pencil - 0.5
Working with fewer time meant detail had to be cut, however I manage to provide some features. I found Kayleigh's glasses help with a template, whilst also displaying an easy sketch for scale.

5 Minutes

Fine liner / Pencil
I've focused primarily on facial features. Keeping a small portion of detail throughout, I've used rough pencil lines towards areas I wouldn't be able to work in-depth. Again working off the glasses was extremely helpful with support.

2 Minutes

Pencil
Detail has been significantly reduced to rough edges and scribbled features. I avoided becoming too attached towards any detail and instinctively gone for a quick manner of work.
